At Altus Intermediate School, we provide the opportunity for all 6th grade students to join Beginning Band. We welcome all students! Prior band and musical experience is not needed. During the Spring semester of the student's 5th grade year, the band directors will come to the general music classes and give all students the opportunity to experience the instruments offered in Beginning Band. From that, the student will receive a letter inviting them to join band at Altus Intermediate School. It is that easy! At the beginning of their 6th grade year, we will have an Instrument Fair for all parents to obtain their student's instrument, book and supplies.
Instruments that we start students on at AIS are: Flute (YFL-222) * Oboe (School Owned) * Bassoon (School Owned) Clarinet (Yamaha YCL-255) Trumpet (YTR-2330S) Trombone (YSL-354) Tuba (School Owned) **Percussion (Ludwig LMXYLO)
Altus Public Schools highly recommends purchasing "Yamaha" brand wind instruments for all beginning band students. These instrument are of a high quality and have a tendency to play in tune better, stand up to beginning use better, and need repair much less often than other brands. For your convenience prior to purchasing a used instrument, you can bring it to an Altus band director to see if it needs repair prior to the first use of your student musician.
* The Oboe and Bassoon are auditioned instruments. Please see Mr Hastings or Mr DeLao to set up a time for an audition.
** The percussion instrument is the only instrument that requires a coordination audition. See Mr. Willing to set up this audition. Percussion students will require different items for band than the wind instrument players. All percussion players will need the following four items.
1. Snare Drum Book
2. Mallet Book
3. Stick/Mallet Bag Innovative Percussion SB-3
4. Student Xylophone Kit Ludwig LMXYLO
